Why do we choose to make with specific materials? Most times it’s about that material being the best thing for the job. However this is not always the case. Take ceramic table ware for example, in terms of practicality a polymer would be better for the job, easier to clean less likely to brake, but the tradition behind the material and the object means it’ll be a long time before we change that habit. This tradition can be seen as a materials emotional history, it is the reason we have opinions on a material before it’s even been made into an object.
For this project I have been creating a series of concrete Urns, these tie the material to an incredibly emotional time of someone’s life. This humanises a material long seen as cold and harsh and promotes quality’s not usually seen in concrete products.
